In close proximity to the Truong Son range of Vietnam, Hoang Lien National Park is situated in the ecological zone of the Hoang Lien Son range, which is an extension of the Himalaya range from Yunnan province in China. A variety of rare and valuable species, many of which are listed in the Red Books of Vietnam and other countries, as well as several endemic species that only occur in Sa Pa, may be found in Hoang Lien National Park. One of the first ASEAN Heritage Parks in Vietnam to receive UNESCO recognition is Hoang Lien National Park.
Hoang Lien National Park has 29,845 acres in total. A portion of Hoang Lien, Ta Van, and Ban Ho communes in Sa Pa city (Lao Cai province), as well as certain communes in Tan Uyen and Than Uyen districts (which were in Lai Chau province), are included in the park, which is situated on the east side of the Hoang Lien Son range.
Hoang Lien National Park's biodiversity includes 136 different bird species, 26 amphibian species, 61 reptile species, and 553 different insect species, 37 of which are listed in the "Vietnam's Red Book" such Petaurista and Hylopetes alboniger. In addition to 105 kinds of flowers and attractive plants, Hoang Lien National Park features 173 species of herbs, many of which are uncommon and valuable. Examples include Panax stipuleanatus, Codonopsis pilosula, and 500 acres of cardamom. Orchids come in hundreds of different species.
